Aeronautical Safety Product Engineer

Primary purpose of the role:
The aeronautical sector is presently Inmarsat's most rapidly growing service sector.  Underpinning this growth is Inmarsat's commitment to highly reliable safety services.   This high growth sector now requires a dynamic and innovative Safety Product Engineer to be able to actively address Aeronautical Safety Service technical queries, customer support issues and development/technical evaluation projects.
In addition to the above, the new role will have responsibility for managing classic aero interoperability with MTSAT (the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau Multifunction Transport Satellite).  It will also encompass the transition of process functions from Product and Service Management to Customer Service (CS), development of Service Level Agreements (SLA).  Although the emphasis of the role will be existing aero safety services, over a period of time the job holder will also begin to support SwiftBroadband service activities.
The successful candidate will join the Aeronautical Product and Service Management team within the Commercial, Product and Service Management Division.
Key responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be required to carry out duties to include the following:
  • In collaboration with Manager Aero Safety Services, Customer Service (CS) and Satellite Network Operations (SNO), rapidly develop a detailed understanding of the Classic Aero Safety Service operation and enhance and mature the Service Support to our Distribution Partners. (This will entail providing specialist support for activation issues, transitioning aero processes management to the Customer Care functions and developing service level agreements).
  • The post-holder will work with designated contacts at Distribution Partners, avionics manufacturers, Ground Earth Station operators, Airframers, Air traffic Service Providers and Communications Service Providers in relation to their business and commercial plans for the service. The objective being to align new developments, service enhancements, in-life service support and ultimately customer migration and service withdrawal.
  • Assist in the maintenance of Swift64 operations (including the conclusion of terminal frequency category transition) and ultimately customer migration to SwiftBroadband.
  • With the assistance of Inmarsat's Satellite and Networks Operation Division perform technical analysis of Classic, Swift64 and SwiftBroadband performance as required.
  • To assist the Manager Aero Safety Services, Engineering and SwiftBroadband Product Managers in the development of a SwiftBroadband Safety Service.
  • To, over a period of time, represent Inmarsat at key industry meetings including Airline Electronic Engineering Committee (AEEC) and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
  • To ultimately contribute to:
    • decision making on key engineering and operational activities and driving through any processes, including business case generation, approval and implementation.
    • Inmarsat's strategic planning affecting the aeronautical market and service development.
  • Provide product support to infrastructure development projects, such as Alphasat and Ancillary Terrestrial Component.
  • Manage any system test bed environments required; provide support to other engineers carrying out testing; carry out own test activities; maintain and expand test beds.

Essential knowledge and skills:
  • University degree in relevant IT / Telecommunications subjects, preferably at Masters level.
  • Have a technical qualification in an engineering or science discipline.
  • Have technical acumen and drive to increase efficiency of the aeronautical products, by containing costs and maximising revenues.
  • Knowledge/active interest in aeronautical communications.
  • Show the ability to prioritise and focus effort across several projects at once.
  • The candidate must have fluent written and oral command of English language at a business level. Additionally, the candidate will be able to communicate effectively with senior management and possess excellent presentation skills.
  • The candidate will possess the ability to prepare technical reports, produce well-written material and presentations.
  • International travel is required. The candidate will possess the necessary interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity to gain high regard in an international environment. They will set priorities for their own workload and possess the ability to work unsupervised and occasionally alone in any part of the world.

Desirable knowledge and skills:
  • 3 years experience in delivering communications solutions and IT project management.
  • Full network understanding of 3G / UMTS mobile communications.
  • Practical experience and good knowledge of satellite communication systems and equipment (testing and verification, data communication and networking).
  • Advanced MS Excel and Project skills would be an asset.
  • Business / Management qualification at diploma level or above a bonus (particularly in Project Management fields).
  • Knowledge of system integration, field test and integration campaigns, software development and engineering techniques, protocol testing methods, system modelling and validation techniques.
  • Knowledge in a range of data communication protocols such as TCP/IP, L2TP, IPSec, OSI principles
  • Network management: SNMP, Radius etc.
